The best form of teeth whitening is a tray system that you take home. In order to have an excellent and permanent result, dental peroxide must be in contact with the teeth for a certain amount of time over a minimum time period. Laser treatments in our experience are not as effective and effects are temporary. Laser treatments are also more expensive. At WF Dental Hygiene we use a whitening system called POLA, pola consists of 16% Carbamide Peroxide that comes in a gel form that you insert into a customised tray and wear for a minimum of 2 hours daily for a period of 2 weeks. We advise to bleach overnight for best results. bearing in mind laser treatments take an hour as opposed to 2 weeks of daily bleaching, you can see why home whitening is much more successful.

some frequently asked questions about teeth whitening
Will it harm my teeth?
NO
Teeth whitening at our clinic is regulated by EU law. It has been set at a safe level via this law, to ensure that people will be safe to use it.
Before regulation dental bleach contained approximately 37% peroxide, which in turn was harmful to teeth and gums, especially if used incorrectly.
Now you are only able to legally receive teeth whitening from a regiserted and trained dental professional. Here your dental clinician will be able to provide you with a prescription (dental peroxide is classified as a prescription medicine just like antibiotics are, meaning you cant buy legal bleach over the counter).
Dental bleach can be harmful, but only if it isn't licensed and you have received it by someone who doesn't have a sound dental background and knowledge.
How long does it take to bleach my teeth?
2 weeks
Teeth whitening takes a minimum of 2 weeks using Carbamide Peroxide. There is a quicker form of peroxide, but in our professional experience there are worse side effects such as sensitivity. We have also found the result of carbamide peroxide better.
You must try and bleach your teeth every day consecutively for the 2 week period to achieve the desired result. When topping up in the future (whitening lasts approximately 18-24 months) you wont have to bleach for 2 weeks. It is usually 3-7 days as you aren't starting from scratch
How White will my teeth go?
It depends completely on your teeth
Every one person is different. Teeth are a natural tissue of the body that reacts and changes at its own rate.
A given is that after 2 weeks of bleaching your teeth WILL be whiter. How white depends on factors like.... How stained your teeth are..... how quickly your teeth absorb the bleach.... how thick your teeth are.... how much wear you have in your teeth.
The are a wide range of variables that will effect the shade reached. Your dental professional will give you a full consultation to discuss any complications you may hit during your teeth whitening program. We have never had a patient who's teeth remained the same shade and didn't whiten.
Does it hurt?
NO - but you can experience sensitivity
Sensitivity comes in different severities. It may not happen at all and in most cases it doesn't, but some people do experience some degree of sensitivity whilst bleaching.
When peroxide enters the tooth it works its way through the tooth towards the centre, once it hits the centre of the tooth it can slightly irritate the nerve. It wont damage your tooth or the nerve and if you stop bleaching the sensivity will disappear. This is very normal and can be easily controlled. In your bleaching kit, you have an information sheet on how to deal with sensitivity, but if you have any questions, please call your dental professional and they will personally tailor your whitening regime to your symptoms. Sensitivity usually starts on day 3/4 and eases off following this.
